Next Wednesday, November 3rd employers across New Brunswick will have the opportunity to showcase their workplaces to Grade 9 students who are taking part in a strategy developed by The Learning Partnership called “Take Your Kids to Work”. This annual, national program enables the entire community - parents, teachers and employers to play an important role in the career development of our youth - our future workforce.
Members of the Business Education Forum, a Saint John Board of Trade Committee realized that this ‘one day workforce’ and their host companies or parents might be open to attending a supporting event designed to align and compliment this community wide career development initiative. The result is a November 3rd, 2010 ‘lunch and learn’ opportunity called “Our Kids, Their Future”.
This unique luncheon will feature a keynote address from Jamie Korab, a 2006 Olympic Gold medalist in Curling. Mr. Korab will relate his Olympic experience and how the same principles apply to reaching career goals and educational goals. After the luncheon, employers/parents and their one day Grade 9 workforce will have the opportunity to meet Mr. Korab who will be available for photos with his Gold Medal and student attendees can also visit booths featuring the 6 Career Destinations and labour market information.
The luncheon event will be held at the Saint John Trade and Convention Centre from Noon until 1:30 pm, on Wednesday, November 3rd, 2010 and tickets can be purchased by calling the Board of Trade office at 634-8111 or email: Info@sjboardoftrade.com Tickets are $70 +HST (Student & Adult) or $250 +HST for table of eight!

Replacement workers legislation off the table for this Parliament
The following is an update from the Canadian Chamber of Commerce
On Wednesday, October 20th, a majority of 153 MPs voted to defeat Bill C-386 An Act to amend the Canada Labour Code (replacement workers). This means that bills addressing this issue will be ruled as inadmissible during this Parliament. This is good news for Canada’s federally-regulated critical infrastructure providers, including railways, airlines, airports, telecommunications providers, trucking companies, ports and banks. It is also good news for those businesses depending upon them to keep their operations running and Canadians who use electronic banking, automated teller and retail debit card services; rely upon communications in hospitals and police services, airlines, passenger rail; and live in communities with limited or no road access.
If passed, this bill would have prohibited federally-regulated critical infrastructure providers from using replacement workers, during a labour dispute to keep goods and services flowing to Canadian businesses and citizens.
The defeat of this bill was due, in large part, to the power of the 420-member Canadian Chamber network of local chambers of commerce and boards of trade who spoke to their members of Parliament to let them know how harmful this type of legislation could be to all businesses and all Canadians. Clearly your voices were heard.

Saint John Airport Partners with BOT
Airport is drop off location for Bare Necessities Campaign
The Saint John Airport announced on October 21st that passengers using the Saint John Airport can drop off items for the Bare Necessities Campaign as part of the Saint John Board of Trade’s seasonal collection program.
A collection box has been set up outside the security area so that passengers and others visiting the terminal can donate items.
“The Saint John Airport is a very accessible location. As such, it is a great spot for people to drop off items to donate to local charities. In addition, passengers carrying items that do not meet current security regulations can now donate those items to a local charity prior to entering the security area,” stated Colleen Mitchell, Director of Marketing and Communications at the Saint John Airport.
The goal of the Board of Trade’s ninth annual “Bare Necessities” campaign is to provide women’s shelters, food banks and other charitable organizations packages with ‘little but necessary’ personal care items, just in time for the holiday season.
Mrs. Mitchell reinforced the Airport’s support for this program, “We are pleased to support this community endeavor. As many of the items donated are toiletry items from travelers, the airport is a logical fit with this program. We congratulate the Board of Trade on this initiative and hope to partner on other community programs in the future.”
The Bare Necessities Campaign continues until November 26.

CCC releases fiscal report
The Canadian Chamber of Commerce released a report on October 19, 2010 calling for the government to take immediate action to address Canada’s immediate and longer-term economic and budgetary challenges.
In its report, entitled Fiscal Policy for a Stronger Tomorrow, the Canadian Chamber outlines its three-pronged strategy — securing the recovery, moving forward with a strong and credible plan to return to budget balance and undertaking structural reforms to bolster the economy’s long-term growth potential — which will ensure Canada’s economy prospers over the long term, stays competitive, dynamic and flexible, and is capable of readily adjusting and adapting to changing circumstances and economic shocks. Point Lepreau Generating Station Refurbishment Project Update
Work on the Point Lepreau Generating Station’s Refurbishment Project continues. On Friday, October 8, 2010, it was announced that Atomic Energy of Canada Limited (AECL) had recommended that all 380 calandria tubes previously inserted inside the reactor be removed and replaced as part of the required technical solution to achieve calandria tube rolled joint seal integrity.
Guidance on the overall project schedule continues to be founded on the best information and experience available. As a result of the decision to proceed with removal and replacement of the 380 calandria tubes, AECL has now revised its project schedule with a planned completion date of May 2012 for Phase 2 of the overall Point Lepreau Generating Station Refurbishment Project. Once retube activities are completed, NB Power will proceed with the commissioning activities which will take approximately four months in order to safely return the reactor to service in the fall of 2012 ready for the heating season.
