Businesses in the province are being warned by Service New Brunswick of a telephone scam similar to one reported last summer in Nova Scotia.
Service New Brunswick has received at least one report of an individual misrepresenting himself as an employee of the New Brunswick business registry and asking for a credit card number to charge a $199 renewal fee for the registry.
Service New Brunswick operates the registry and annually charges businesses a renewal fee of $80 by paper and $60 online.
Local Government Minister Bruce Fitch, who is also minister responsible for Service New Brunswick, cautioned business owners to be diligent and to report suspicious calls to the Canadian Anti-Fraud Centre by going online or by calling 1-888-495-8501.
"Unfortunately, fraudsters are out there all the time trying to take advantage of business people, hoping to catch them off guard," said Fitch. "Service New Brunswick would always make contact by mail first."
