Atlantica Centre for Energy Paper - Analyses Regional Impacts of Lower Churchill Hydroelectric Project

The following is a news release from the Atlantica Centre for Energy

Saint John: The Atlantic Centre for Energy is pleased to release the attached discussion paper that aims to analyze the impacts that the project is apt to have throughout the Atlantic Region and beyond. The paper provides an overview of the project and its enabling transmission infrastructure. The paper describes individual jurisdictional impacts for Novas Scotia, Newfoundland and the extended region.

Various ancillary issues are also introduced within the document, including matters related to the future development of wind energy, transmission cost sharing, North American reliability standards and regional system operation matters.

“Overall the Atlantica Centre for Energy sees the Lower Churchill Development as a game changer for the region. The project and its infrastructure has the potential to enable further investments in the energy sector. The supporting transmission provides the potential for the region to optimize all of its regional energy generation assets and further the development of renewable wind energy balanced with further hydroelectric power. It is also true that various transmission cost related matters will need to be negotiated by the various regional players based on the principle of who benefits and who should pay,” stated Atlantica Centre for Energy President John Herron.

The Centre hopes that paper will serve as an instrument of information as a baseline document for the broader policy community as it considers matters related to this exciting regional project.
