The Manchester Millrats are pleased to announce that they have officially relocated to Saint John, New Brunswick. The move was announced at a well attended press conference on the floor of Harbour Station arena, the new home of the Millrats.
Speakers included former City Councilor Carl White, who served as M.C., PBL President and Owner of the Halifax Rainmen Andre Levingston, Millrats President & General Manager Ian McCarthy, Harbour Station Chairman of the Board Peter Kohn, Steve Carson from Enterprise Saint John, Mayor Ivan Court, Saint John Sea Dogs President Wayne Long, Millrats Principal Owner Jason Briggs, Millrats Co-Owner and player David Cooper, and Jason Lindsay from East Saint John Minor Basketball.
Also in attendance were members of the media, Mayors from several surrounding New Brunswick cities, local business representatives, local basketball coaches, friends and family members of the above, as well as area fans. The air was full of excitement as each speaker expressed their passion for the sport of basketball and what this announcement would mean for the City and for the Province.
Attendees were treated to refreshments courtesy of the Harbour Station management, and got a taste of the newly installed HD video jumbotron.
As a friendly jab at Levingston, a fictitious score was displayed on the jumbotron reading Millrats 129 Rainmen 70 showing 2:05 left in the 4th quarter. The gag was not lost on many however. A central theme of the talks and social activities afterward centered around stirring what will no doubt become a red-hot rivalry between Saint John and Halifax.
"We admire and respect what Andre has accomplished in Halifax and the Rainmen are a first class organization and team," explained Millrats President and General Manager Ian McCarthy, "but of course we look forward to improving our franchise's 9-3 lifetime record against them on the court."
The Millrats are planning to announce in the coming weeks a team naming contest to allow the community to speak on the name. They plan to be fully open and operational there in August.
